GreenTree was originally developed in 2015 for the Municipality of Thessaloniki, as part of the research project URBAN.FOR.MA.S funded by the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology. The project was coordinated by HOMEOTECH and implemented in collaboration with the School of Forestry & Natural Environment of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (scientifically responsible Professor Thekla Tsitsoni), the Municipality of Thessaloniki and YLORIKI Co.

During the project duration, from 2012 to 2015:

1. the characteristics of 41,859 trees/ tree pits along streets were recorded using the GreenTree android application
2. a detailed, online database for street trees was created for the Municipality of Thessaloniki through the GreenTree server
3. a website was developed in order to provide open access to basic information collected during the inventory, as well as advanced features to authorized users (urban green managers)
